A Big Red Flag When Hiring a Web Designer
Regardless of your reasons for wanting a new business website, chances are you want the process to move along as quickly as possible. You’ve done a few quotes, checked out some samples, and have been dazzled by what you have seen from a particular web designer, or web design team. So it’s time to sign the contract and get started, right?
Not so fast…
Before you commit your digital future to a new vendor, ask yourself: are you confident they are taking the time to really understand where your business needs to be six months from now – or six years from now, for that matter – or are they just trying to find out how to sell you a pretty website? Going through the consultation process quickly takes an item off of your “to-do” list, but it’s not going to do your business any favors in the long run.
It’s easy for clients, who are busy enough as it is, to want to speed through the question-and-answer periods that should come well before prices, layouts, and different e-commerce functions are ever talked about. When that happens, however, it’s your designer or team’s job to hit the brakes and save you from your busy schedule. In other words, they should take the initiative to find out what you really need, rather than scribbling down a couple of notes and pushing their bid in front of you.
If your web designer doesn’t seem inclined to spend a lot of time on the consultation process, consider it a huge red flag. It might be more convenient for you to brush over the details of your business now, but you can bet you’ll wish you would have spent more time when you’re paying for it later.
